The other day I went to my local supermarket after work to pick up some provisions for dinner. As I was standing on line at the checkout I glanced up at the wall next to where the employees punch their time cards. On it there was a notice to all employees that at the last inventory the store was $171,000 short!! I could read this clearly from where I was standing because it was in huge print. Below this statement there was a small printed list of what employees could do to help prevent this in the future.

I have no desire to ever use my credit card there again. I think from now on all purchases will be made in cash at this grocery store. In fact, during this purchase I found myself totally shielding the keypad where you punch in your pin from the cashier.

I’ve decided that either my fellow shoppers are sinister and stealing merchandise, or the employees I am handing my credit card over to are stealing.

Why was this sign placed where all customers could see it?

This was a form letter with the amount of money lost inked in with a sharpie. I am therefore assuming that this is a common occurrence in the supermarket business. Talk about shrinkage! (If this is common there should also be protocol about not posting this sign where your customers can see it!)

My husband and I were once at the same supermarket and got extremely helpful service from our cashier. My husband went to the manager to compliment the employee and the manager came out of his office with a dreaded look on his face. He obviously was preparing himself for some kind of complaint. When we told him that we wanted to compliment our cashier the manager mumbled a thanks and that was that.

Things go wrong in business all the time. The fact that this letter was a template and just taped to the wall tells me that there is an overwhelming complacency within the company for this kind of thing. Or it could be normal in the supermarket business, I really don’t know. Either way it feels like they have things backward.

Hmmm – is this already a blog that I have to write in as a chore or is it fun for me? I don’t know yet. I like writing here, but I don’t know what I should write….isn’t that the biggest problem usually? I visually love me right now. Sitting on my couch with my feet up on the coffee table and my laptop on top of me. Charlie laying on the floor and Chris sitting on the other end of the couch. We are flipping between the Mets and the Yankees.

I look incredibly smart with my glasses on and all. But what in the hell am I contributing here. What is the point of the blog…am I just supposed to write about what I am doing? Do you want to know how I am feeling? Is this supposed to be fun for you the reader or for me the writer? (Actually, I can probably answer this one since I think I’ve got exactly one reader out there right now…)

So if it is for me, just how personal should I get? I don’t know. I guess I’ll figure it out as we roll along.

In the meantime, here is a very pretty picture of something I would really like to own.

When Chris and I first met in 2000 we worked at the same company. I was a smoker averaging about a pack a day and we would go out for a drink after work regularly. I would say that after work drink was probably the foundation of our relationship during those first few months. I lived in Queens, he lived in Cold Spring, we would walk across the street after work to the Roosevelt Hotel, right next to Grand Central, have a drink or two at the bar, and head on home.

Once we got past that shy beginning and moved on into a full fledged relationship we started taking care of ourselves. Out went the smokes, in came the gym. Out went fast food, in came grilled chicken, protein shakes, and steamed vegetables.

We started to lug all our food around in a big shopping bag which we affectionately referred to as “the feed bag”. Seven years later we are still lugging all our food around with us although lately we’ve been getting zone chef’s for convenience sake.

I was browsing online a couple of months ago and came across this:

A real feedbag! And it’s for a good cause. (It looks cute and its reversible too) With each purchase of a bag you feed a child in a starving country through the UN World Food Programme for one full year. I wish they had been around when I was looking for bridal party gifts because they would have been perfect. I ordered one and I absolutely love it. I think it makes a great gift for anyone, especially that kid who gets to eat every day.
